The Bread of the Tabernacle

“And you shall take fine flour and bake twelve (A)cakes with it. Two-tenths of an ephah shall be in each cake. You shall set them in two rows, six in a row, (B)on the pure gold table before the Lord. And you shall put pure frankincense on each row, that it may be on the bread for a (C)memorial, an offering made by fire to the Lord. (D)Every Sabbath he shall set it in order before the Lord continually, being taken from the children of Israel by an everlasting covenant. And (E)it shall be for Aaron and his sons, (F)and they shall eat it in a holy place; for it is most holy to him from the offerings of the Lord made by fire, by a perpetual statute.”

David and the Holy Bread

21 Now David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. And (A)Ahimelech was (B)afraid when he met David, and said to him, “Why are you alone, and no one is with you?”

So David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has ordered me on some business, and said to me, ‘Do not let anyone know anything about the business on which I send you, or what I have commanded you.’ And I have directed my young men to such and such a place. Now therefore, what have you on hand? Give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or whatever can be found.”

And the priest answered David and said, “There is no [a]common bread on hand; but there is (C)holy[b] bread, (D)if the young men have at least kept themselves from women.”

Then David answered the priest, and said to him, “Truly, women have been kept from us about three days since I came out. And [c]the (E)vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in effect common, even though it was consecrated (F)in the vessel this day.”

So the priest (G)gave him holy bread; for there was no bread there but the showbread (H)which had been taken from before the Lord, in order to put hot bread in its place on the day when it was taken away.

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralytic(A)

17 Now it happened on a certain day, as He was teaching, that there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every town of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was present [a]to heal them. 18 (B)Then behold, men brought on a bed a man who was paralyzed, whom they sought to bring in and lay before Him. 19 And when they could not find how they might bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the housetop and let him down with his bed through the tiling into the midst (C)before Jesus.

20 When He saw their faith, He said to him, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.”

21 (D)And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? (E)Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

22 But when Jesus (F)perceived their thoughts, He answered and said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise up and walk’? 24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins”—He said to the man who was paralyzed, (G)“I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.”

25 Immediately he rose up before them, took up what he had been lying on, and departed to his own house, (H)glorifying God. 26 And they were all amazed, and they (I)glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen strange things today!”

Matthew the Tax Collector(J)

27 (K)After these things He went out and saw a tax collector named Levi, sitting at the tax office. And He said to him, (L)“Follow Me.” 28 So he left all, rose up, and (M)followed Him.

29 (N)Then Levi gave Him a great feast in his own house. And (O)there were a great number of tax collectors and others who sat down with them. 30 [b]And their scribes and the Pharisees [c]complained against His disciples, saying, (P)“Why do You eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

31 Jesus answered and said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 (Q)I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”

Jesus Is Questioned About Fasting(R)

33 Then they said to Him, (S)“Why[d] do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees, but Yours eat and drink?”

34 And He said to them, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the (T)bridegroom is with them? 35 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; then they will fast in those days.”

36 (U)Then He spoke a parable to them: “No one [e]puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 But new wine must be put into new wineskins, [f]and both are preserved. 39 And no one, having drunk old wine, [g]immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is [h]better.’ ”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(V)

Now (W)it happened [i]on the second Sabbath after the first that He went through the grainfields. And His disciples plucked the heads of grain and ate them, rubbing them in their hands. And some of the Pharisees said to them, “Why are you doing (X)what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?”

But Jesus answering them said, “Have you not even read this, (Y)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he went into the house of God, took and ate the showbread, and also gave some to those with him, (Z)which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?” And He said to them, “The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”

Healing on the Sabbath(AA)

(AB)Now it happened on another Sabbath, also, that He entered the synagogue and taught. And a man was there whose right hand was withered. So the scribes and Pharisees watched Him closely, whether He would (AC)heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an (AD)accusation against Him. But He (AE)knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Arise and stand here.” And he arose and stood. Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one thing: (AF)Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or [j]to destroy?” 10 And when He had looked around at them all, He said to [k]the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored [l]as whole as the other. 11 But they were filled with rage, and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.
